KUUBIK OLAP server

open-source software for efficient BI

This website informs about the KUUBIK open-source OLAP server software and the ecosystem around it for efficient reporting and planning solutions.

well wait... currently there is no such software existing. For the moment this website is providing only information about the idea and the project to create such an open-source software solution. We have shortly ago started the project in January 2026 - first steps are collecting requirements and getting knowledge about designing the software components. If you want to contribute to the project, every input and help is welcome. Please go to the Contribute page for more information.

KUUBIKmission

Our goal is to create an open-source OLAP server with full reporting and planning capabilities. We want to give users a cost-efficient possibility for setting up their reporting and planning processes with on-premise solutions avoiding hidden costs and cloud vendor-lock-in.

The current BI solution provider of my employer forces us to move to a cloud-only solution. But we do not want to save our business critical data and plans into a cloud solution. So, we started searching for alternatives.
I have found that there are not much OLAP servers with planning capabilities out there, and none of them were based on open-source or actively maintained. Furthermore the known providers are not offering add-ins for LibreOffice or other alternatives to Microsoft Office - enterprises needing BI solutions ending usually in a vendor-lock-in to Microsoft.
This brought me to the idea to work on a new solution filling these gaps. I am sure that this project could also contribute to the digital souverenity in Europe.

KUUBIKroadmap

The idea of the KUUBIK ecosystem consist of these components:

KUUBIK calc
KUUBIKcalc will be an add-in to analyze OLAP cube data within LibreOffice Calc. The add-in should work on all environments where LibreOffice is supported. The add-in is planned to communicate with OLAP servers via MDX over XLMA (XML for analysis). This communication protocol should allow the use of KUUBIKcalc with all available servers supporting the MDX standard. This could enable current BI users of other providers to work also with LibreOffice. Another intended feature is supporting writeback to OLAP servers (where supported).
KUUBIKolap
KUUBIKcore will be our own OLAP database engine. It is planned to run on Linux as well as on Windows. Integrated user/role and access rights management as well as external OpenLDAP/Active Directory SSO is planned. Data loading from relational source databases like MySQL/MariaDB, PostgreSQL and MS-SQL should be implemented. The OLAP server is storing data in memory-optimized file format, also allowing writeback for planning tasks. An own web-based configuration tool will accompany the core OLAP engine.
KUUBIKview
KUUBIKview is planned to be a web-based reporting engine for standard reports and dashboards. Designing the reports should be made with tools based on LibreOffice Calc to have a low barrier for designer users with spreadsheet knowledge. Also the rendering engine for displaying the reports/dashboards in web browsers is planned to be based on LibreOffice. This allows smooth integration into LibreOffice products for further processing (Impress, Writer or Calc). KUUBIKview enables report management (organizing in folders, version management and access rights).

At the current project state we are focussing on:

  • Collecting requirements for the different components
  • Evaluating basic and extended functions to create a detailled roadmap
  • Learning techniques to realize LibreOffice add-ins
  • Researching for best technical solution for an OLAP server
  • Get in contact with other people interested in the KUUBIK project and getting input from them

As first we will focus on KUUBIKcalc as this is the most interesting for existing BI users to also use LibreOffice with their existing OLAP servers. Furthermore the add-in project gives us good insights in the MDX communication between clients and OLAP servers. At the moment we do not have a timeline for the development of the KUUBIK ecosystem - please subscribe to our newsletter to stay informed.
